Public - G Job Duties The Virginia Department of Education is
looking for a Compliance Specialist to support activities that
forward the organization’s mission, specifically described in the
Department’s strategic plan to address the needs of students with
disabilities and other student services. This position provides
highly complex special education technical assistance to local
school divisions; provides consultation to school division
personnel, parents, VDOE staff, and other agencies and groups on
state and federal laws and regulations governing special education.
The Compliance Specialist will be responsible for the following
duties: Conduct investigations and resolution of special education
complaints in accordance with mandated timelines, regulations and
office protocols. Provide leadership in special education technical
assistance to local school divisions, private schools, and others
by working with a team of specialists to identify problems and
solutions. Maintain updated status information on the office’s
tracking logs on special education complaints, corrective action
plans, and CAP implementation process. Assist in coordinating
activities to the revision of the Virginia special education
regulation process. Provide assistance to school divisions to
develop and implement corrective action plans resulting from
complaints or due process. Minimum Qualifications Considerable
knowledge of technical issues involved in special education
regulations. Knowledge of legal principles and specific skill
ability to analyze complicated issues, and to develop responses
that are consistent with federal and state laws and regulations
governing special education. Demonstrated ability to define
problems and apply problem solving techniques to complex
educational issues; to work collaboratively with colleagues; to
manage multiple assignments with critical deadlines; to present
complex information to both technical and lay audiences; to work
independently to produce reports, etc.; to coordinate work
assignments with other pertinent staff; and basic facility with
keyboarding and computer technology. Expertise in effective
communication, both oral and written, along with the ability to
successfully work with school administrators, parents and community
members having an interest or stake in local special education
programs. Additional Considerations Graduation from an accredited
college/university or an equivalent combination of education and
experience; an advanced degree in administration, law, special
education or other related field is preferred. Experience in the
area of special education law, administration, or working with
programs for students with disabilities and familiarity with other
agencies that provides services to children with disabilities and
their families is preferred. Special Instructions You will be
