Job DescriptionMANAGER OF PATIENT SERVICESSusan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital at the Richmond SPCA Full-time exempt, 40 hours per week Reports to the Hospital DirectorThe Richmond SPCA is one of our region's most beloved non-profit organizations. As a national no-kill leader in animal welfare, the Richmond SPCA is building a more compassionate community through the delivery of crucial programs of pet adoption, retention, training, advocacy, humane education, and more. Annually, we rescue, rehabilitate and adopt out nearly 4,000 homeless animals while also providing our community with vital safety net programs designed to keep pets in loving homes and out of shelters.The Susan M. Markel Veterinary hospital provides quality care at a reduced cost to pets in the Greater Richmond region. It is our mission to ensure that families have access to affordable treatment options for their companion animals, regardless of financial hardships. We are seeking a Manager of Patient Services to join our team in providing high quality of care to pets of income-qualified guardians in the Greater Richmond community as well as pets adopted from our center. This is a unique opportunity to join a well-respected group of doctors, technicians and support staff.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Hire and manage (to include scheduling) medical support staff
  • Assist in triage of urgent medical cases
  • Conduct daily assessments of the operational needs of the hospital
  • Manage physical inventory (to include pharmaceuticals, kennel supplies, consumables, etc.) and medical equipment maintenance
  • Create and implement procedures and protocols that will increase efficiencies and maximize effectiveness in both treatment and surgical areas
  • Create, implement and maintain training guidelines and resources for medical support staff, to include treatment and surgical training manuals
  • Monitor employee progress during training and provide feedback as needed
  • Coordinate with the Hospital Director and Manager of Client Services to create and distribute regular staff memos and lead monthly medical staff meetings
  • Conduct yearly employee reviews for medical support staff in collaboration with the Hospital Director
  • Provide excellent customer service to all clients, while motivating support staff to do the same
  • Other job-related duties as assigned
  • Attend and participate in all required trainings and meetingsREQUIREMENTS:
    • Able to react to change productively
    • Daytime availability Monday through Friday
    • Reliable transportation, including during inclement weather
    • Able to work in a high volume, fast-paced, high-stress environment
    • 18 years of age or older
    • Successful completion of a background check
    • Documentation of COVID-19 vaccination status or an approved accommodation*QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPECTATIONS:
      • 3+ years of management experience preferred
      • Excellent attention to detail

      • Proficiency with Avimark is preferred
      • Able to learn new software quickly and completely
      • Able to maintain existing organizational systems

      • Able to adapt to and accommodate changing demands
      • Prior experience in a shelter or fast-paced hospital a plus

        • Able to routinely lift 40-50 lbs.
        • Able to work around animals (including those who are sick or injured or who have behavior challenges), loud noises, cat litter, animal waste, and various chemicals
        • Able to bend and use your arms in a repetitive manner
        • Able to kneel, stoop, and use stairs
        • Able to be on your feet for an entire 8-hour shift
        • Willing to work in all weather conditionsWORK ENVIRONMENT:
          • Rapid pace with exposure to potential hazards including animal waste and disinfectants
          • High levels of noise
          • Potential for animal bites and scratches and diseases that are zoonotic (can be transmitted from animals to people)
