HCA Nurse Residency Program (Oncology Medical Surgical Unit)
StaRN Program (12 Weeks Total):
Our StaRN Program will provide you with the tools necessary to succeed in today's hospital environment. It will help you transition out of the classroom setting and onto the unit by providing the following training:
- 5 weeks classroom, self-study, skills & simulations
- 7 weeks preceptorship
- Certifications: ECG, TeamSTEPPS, BLS/ACLS, CPI
After StaRN, you will transition into our Professional Development Residency:
- 9 month program factored into a full time position on the unit
- You will learn Charge Nurse and Preceptor skills
- You will collaborate with a mentor to complete an evidence based Capstone Project (4 hours a month)
- Your project has an opportunity to gain recognition by corporate for further recognition

Additional Information about our Oncology Medical Surgical Unit:
You will work on a 24 bed unit where patients are undergoing or recovering from surgical and non-invasive cancer procedures for solid tumors receiving palliative care, end-of-life care, and hospice care
You will be joining a team of compassionate RNs who are highly trained to provide care for patients who are undergoing multiple sessions of a wide variety of chemotherapies.
Many of our patients are on the unit every 3 weeks over a period of 9-10 weeks or longer. This fosters the opportunity for our nurses to build strong relationships with our patients and their families as patient treatment progresses.
Our patient/nurse ratio 4:1
Within 6 months of working on the floor, our nurses take a chemotherapy/biotherapy certification course. 40& of our nurses hold certification (OCN). Once certified, our nurses can begin hanging and administering chemotherapy to our patients.
The environment on the Thomas Johns Inpatient Oncology Unit is positive and supportive, team-oriented, with a strong focus on education and continuing professional development. It is an environment where our nurses and physicians work together closely to assure our patients experience the best possible care.

- Graduate of an accredited nursing school within the past 6 months
- Applicants may apply and be offered position prior to passing NCLEX exam
- Previous nursing support or service industry experience preferred
