Position Summary: The Sr. R&D Engineer/Scientist supports the research and development efforts for new product development, aligned with the global business plans. This position works closely with the commercial, marketing, and R&D fundamentals teams for the Chemical Intermediates and Nylon Solutions businesses to scale-up new product offerings from lab/benchtop through to commercial launch. The Sr. R&D Engineer/Scientist is responsible for translating base chemistry into economically viable manufacturing processes, at both Advansix sites and through toll manufacturers. This role employs traditional process optimization, piloting, modeling & simulations, and detailed analytical evaluations to advance research towards new product introduction and commercialization.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-lab synthesis reactions in batch and continuous systems for small molecule and polymer target candidates
  • Execute chemical process development & scale-up from glassware to pilot assets
  • Perform material characterization, impurity analysis, and process optimization studies
  • Develop definition of technology packages as basis for manufacturing plan
  • Partner with engineering team on design, construction, and implementation of new manufacturing technology
  • Perform other work related to process development based on the organization's market needs and strategy, including economic and competitive process evaluations
  • Develop projects and partner with others on the team to generate new technology and ideas that will impact the profitability of the business
  • Lead various engineering and technical projects with an emphasis on contributing to new technology/product development and process improvement
  • Provide process expertise and operating knowledge to solve customer problems and support sales
  • Work closely with internal customer, project teams, and other colleagues to solve technical problems
  • Develop functional solutions to complex chemical and process problems

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry and/or chemical engineering preferred
  • B.S. or Master's degree in chemistry and/or chemical engineering, plus 5 or more yrs relevant experience also considered

Additional Qualifications:

  • Technical competence including organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and analytical chemistry
  • Experience optimizing and commercializing chemical processes
  • Hands on experience in operating multiple equipment types and interpretation of analytical data for problem solving
  • Working knowledge of heterogenous catalysis, and preferably catalyst characterization
  • Experience in conducting customer-focused projects and collaborating with cross-functional team (business and marketing) to drive innovation
  • Broad experience in fundamental analytical techniques (GC, HPLC, Rheology, DSC, GPC, IR, and NMR Spectroscopy) and analytical test method development
  • Familiarity with innovation processes like Stage Gate and able to use Six Sigma/statistical analysis tools
  • Knowledge of IP processes and patent filing
  • Execution focused to manage project milestones, timelines, and resources
  • Strong statistical and computer skills, including process simulation packages such as Aspen
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills
  • Must be action and results oriented
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Must be a creative, innovative thinker, able to generate new technology and ideas
  • Demonstrated leadership of smaller projects or components of larger projects
  • Six Sigma certification a plus
